Beth and I held hands as we walked through the tunnels beneath the gymnasium. The locker rooms and offices were empty during the games, so I led her to a bench where we started kissing. My hands explored areas that could risk our suspension if caught by an adult. I desperately wanted to go beyond just touching. When she led me into a closet where a stack of wrestling mats made a perfect spot for us to go all the way. Our pants slid down to our knees, and we became more than just two foolish kids for the first time. I loved her in that moment—even though I didn’t fully understand what true love was. The whole experience lasted only a few minutes, but she kissed me all over my face, telling me how much she loved me.

Breathing heavily, I said, “You are… the best thing… that has ever happened to me.”

Beth rubbed her hand through my hair, grabbing a handful, and whispered in my ear. I knew she was in a safe relationship; I had never forced her to do anything. Now, our first time left me with emotions I had never felt before. We dressed, exited the closet, and turned the corner. Principal Harvey stood at the entrance of the girls’ locker room.

He said, “You kids need to go back upstairs to the auditorium.”

We ran past him, down the corridor, and up the stairs.

Our adolescence led us to risk troubling circumstances, pregnancy, suspension, and reputations. Nothing mattered more than that young love, which caused us to make mistakes. Moments like these taught me a lot after an adult brain helped me realize what might have happened as a result of our carelessness. I will always love Beth for her willingness to care for me, but our fate may have left many new obligations on our families. I had no idea that months later, the fourteen-year-old version of me would end up homeless. I never saw Beth again.

Raising Mother Nature explores topics of human nature, the forces of naivete, and adolescence, speaking honestly about my experiences. Readers find themselves in moments where emotional responses place them in the story. Come be a bystander in the life I once lived and grow with the consciousness that made me the moral man I am today.

God works in mysterious ways, and I was a fortunate child going through a lot back then, and Beth was a sincere friend who proved she loved me fully. Our curiosity got the best of us, but luckily, things turned out okay.

Love yourselves abundantly. I love you all with the consciousness God taught me to exhibit.
