The ache in Calhoun Mane was a heavy burden to bear. He knew the suffering of a broken heart. He had learned to hide the pain behind a smile that stretched from ear to ear. Such experience made Calhoun a prime candidate for a midlife crisis, except he brought this on by the age of twenty-five. His questionable ability to love made romance appear improbable. He now planned to enjoy life.

When Calhoun saw Kameron Grayly for the first time, she glowed in the dim light of the restaurant. His greeting came as a surprise to her. She called Calhoun a creep after he complimented her green eyes. He had never experienced a female playing hard to get, so naturally, he thought she had no interest in his charming ways. A night out with his friends was supposed to be perfect, and now he felt rejected. By evening’s end and the consumption of many beers, he walked by Kameron and gave her a wave.

Kameron asked, “Are you all right to drive? Where are you going now?”

Calhoun said, “We’re headed to a dance club. Wanna come along?”

Kameron declined the invitation and suggested maybe another time. Calhoun, googly-eyed, looked at her as a possible soulmate. His friends reminded him that he knew nothing about this mysterious girl with emerald eyes, but he believed in love at first sight. Love like this, an instant attraction, is a thing of the past.

Find out whether Calhoun left a good enough impression. Please read about this romance in our narrative nonfiction title, Raising Mother Nature, and share in the experience.
